Thank you for visiting!

The Monarch Butterfly Girls

The Monarch Butterfly Girls is a group project designed by a Daisy and Brownie Girl Scout troop made up of girls in kindergarten through third grade. They began the year talking about girls and women who have made a difference in the world and then discussed their own passions (helping animals) and interests (building, plants/flowers).

The plight of the monarch butterfly, which makes a unique migration from Canada to Mexico each Fall and back again in the Spring, ticked all the boxes for the troop. The monarch butterfly population passes through central PA in the summer months but has been steadily decreasing over the past several years due to changing temperatures, decreases in hospitable plant life and an increase in the use of pesticides and other forms of weed control.

The girls in the troop thought of ways to help the monarch butterflies and then set out to share the information with others. Funded fully by the sales of cookies, the troop plans to build butterfly houses, share information about the need for pollinator and host plants (milkweed in particular) and then distribute seeds to anyone who requests a packet, while supplies last. Their goal is to send out 100 packets of seeds to cover hundreds of square feet of land with plants that butterflies need.

In the process of planning and completing the project, the girls learned about things ranging from butterfly ecology to project budgeting to internet safety.  Click "ABOUT" and "HOW TO HELP" to hear from the Girl Scouts -in their own words- about their Action Project and "CONTACT" to find out what you can do to help the monarch butterfly!
